Seismology, monitoring, seismic wave propagation in the heterogeneous Earth

Current Research

Based on waveform analysis of observed seismograms and numerical simulations of seismic wave propagation, I study various seismic phenomena, especially in subduction zones. Research topics are: (A) modeling of seismic wave propagation in the heterogeneous Earth, (B) developments of methods for estimating source kinematics for earthquakes, (C) monitoring of earthquake and volcanic activity, and (D) spatiotemporal analysis of constructed earthquake catalogs. Recently, I have been focusing on understanding shallow, slow earthquake activity along the Nankai Trough, which occurs at depths of 10 km or less. Although slow earthquake regions along the Japan Trench are considered barriers against the rupture of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake, the role of shallow, slow earthquake regions during megathrust earthquakes remains an open question.
I am also working on developing methods for monitoring seismic and volcanic activity far from coastlines, where seismic stations are sparsely deployed.
